When tourism professionals and guests from 137 countries were asked to vote, Geilo ranked no 1 and was officially honoured as Norways Best Ski Resort 2019. The prize ceremony World Ski Awards was recently held in Kitzbühel, Austria.

Winning the World Ski Awards for the very first time is probably the biggest thing that happened to Geilo as a destination. The prize is nothing but a big hand of applause from the world of tourism to an achievement made through common effort from all the companies that are involved in creating benchmark customer value, including hundreds of Geilo employees that meet and serve our guests every day.

Sion Rapson, MD at World Ski Awards:

- May I state just how thrilled I am for Geilo! This year is a historic one for both the ski resort and the town as it will be winning the big Ski Oscar for Norway’s Best Ski Resort for the very first time!

There is of course a number of reasons to why Geilo is this years winner including high scoring for our highly improved alpine product in general, new tourism arrival center at Vestlia and hill modifications to improve the alpine experience. The selection of places to stay ranging from fine Ski Resorts to different hotels and cottages, the many slopes meeting the needs of everyone from the beginner to the expert, a professional ski school, ski rental, buses and logistics, fantastic cross country facilities, the quality level of food and fine restaurants to name just a few.

  • Thanks to extraordinarily good work from our many companies and individuals over a number of years, I have the confidence to say that Geilo today is a complete holiday and ski destination offering everything a guest could ask for and beyond. Carving classes, kiting, mountain top tours, sleigh ride, ice fishing, skeleton, snowshoeing, bowling, fatbike, water fun activities and much more. The fact that you just walk 60 yards from the train station to the city centre with its high quality shops completes the destination, says MD at Ski Geilo and Board Member of Visit Geilo, Ole Halvor Svenkerud.
  • It is also important to underline that this prize awards us all showing what we are able to achieve together when we join forces to create great customer experiences. I am both proud and humble also due to the fact that we beat Norways many other high quality destinations, says Roger Espeli, MD at Geilogroup and Chairman of the Board Visit Geilo. There is hard work ahead of us as we have to improve to defend our reputation as Norways Best Ski Resort in the years to come. We have invested extensively in upgrades and improvements for the upcoming season.

Havdalsgrenda was once again voted Norways Best Chalet during the World Ski Awards in Kitzbühel. We too would like to hear the “once again” next time around.
